Canadore College is expected to issue a request for proposals for a multi-purpose sports facility and twin-pad arena to two potential proponents later this month. College spokeswoman said the request for proposals (RFP) document is now being reviewed and is slated to be issued by mid-June at the latest. Proponents will have 45 days to respond.

The RFP is the latest step in the process of developing a multi-purpose, twin-pad arena at Canadore`s Commerce Court Campus via a public-private partnership. The college received eight submissions in February after issuing a request for information/interest to the private sector. Of those, Charette said only two proponents were able to meet the overarching needs of the project. Once the RFPs have been received, she said Canadore will evaluate the proposals.

The city has been supportive of the college’s plans and has two representatives on the evaluation committee – John Severino, interim managing director of community services and Ian Kilgour, director of parks, recreation and leisure services. Financing and operation the proposed facility will depending on the successful proposal. Canadore has stated previously that the project will not move forward unless it`s deemed financially feasible.

The successful proponent is expected to enter into a long-term land lease arrangement with the college. And the facility is expected to offer a turf field, twin ice pads, rubberized flooring, walking/jogging tracks, concessions and change rooms. The college wants to accommodate a range of sports, including soccer, hockey, figure skating, ringuette, rugby, touch football, ultimate Frisbee, basketball, volleyball, baseball, tennis and golf, as well as a weight room.
