The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will invite tenders worth Rs 1,200 crore to reconstruct roads in the city this year. The civic body has allotted Rs 900 crore to reconstruct major roads and Rs 300 crore for minor roads.

In a move to fix responsibility, BMC has appointed one engineer for each road. With 8 to 12 km of roads under him, he will be responsible for the-ir upkeep.

The road engineers will have to survey roads designated to them and submit to the BMC a list of those that have to be reconstructed by May 15. BMC will then invite tenders for them.

The civic body has appointed engineers at the ward level as road engineers for roads that are less than 30 feet wide (minor) and roads that are wider than 30 feet will be under the care of an engineer from a central agency.

"The engineers will be responsible for granting permission to dig trenches on these roads too. They can call for tenders worth Rs 20 lakh for work on the road they are in charge of. Sanction to these tenders will be given at the ward level," said additional municipal commissioner Aseem Gupta.

He said BMC will this year take up two more cold mix technologies to fill potholes.

It will carry out an audit of the condition of roads under the defect liability period and tell contractors who built them to get them repaired before the monsoon. "Potholes filled last year are under the defect liability period of two years. If the potholes resurface this year, the contractor will have to fill them at his cost," said Gupta
