Greater Chennai Corporation is set to start work on flyover construction projects that have been hanging fire for years.
The civic body has floated a tender for the T-shaped flyover on Ennore High Road and Manali Road in Tondiarpet zone ward number 38 and 41. The work is estimated at Rs.117 crore including expenses for land acquisition. On completion of the flyover, residents in neighbourhoods of north Chennai are expected to get better connectivity with other parts of the city.
Residents have been complaining about the delay caused to vehicles such as ambulances on the way to Stanley Medical College Hospital because of the railway level crossing 2A and 2B. During the previous elections, political parties promised a flyover on the stretch. But land acquisition was a challenge for the 1,700-metre-long flyover. The flyover will be 12.5 metres in width. The process of land acquisition of the 1,600 sq.m.-land through the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board is under way. The work will be completed shortly, officials say.
According to a traffic study, the junctions near the flyover have more than 10,000 passenger car units per hour. In 2012, Mayor Saidai Duraisamy proposed to conduct feasibility studies for construction of grade separators at many places including Valluvar Kottam High Road Junction; Mandaiveli Junction and Royapettah Clock Tower Junction. Some of them have been shelved.
