Implementation of small peanut holder development program for higher incomes and water use efficiency in Junagadh, Gujarat

Background:

Gujarat is one of the main peanut growing regions in India. Despite being a potentially rewarding crop, the area under cultivation of peanuts in India, in general and Gujarat has come down. With most peanut farmers being smallholder farmers in rainfed regions of India, yields are some of the lowest in the world and hence the incomes are not up to the standards of the farming sector. Gujarat state is characterized by erratic and uncertain rainfall coupled with large inter-annual rainfall variability. As groundwater alone accounts to more than 80 per cent of irrigation source, it is no coincidence that the gross mismanagement of the resource has lowered the water table in many parts of the state and has the escalated cost of cultivation. Thus, conservation of water and efficiency is an important task. As per a study, the micro irrigation adoption in groundnut increases water use efficiency (20-90%), saves water (10-60%), produces better quality crop and increases pod yield (5-50%) as compared with conventional irrigation. Secondly, low key awareness on non- monetary inputs and limited technology adoption among the farmers is also is a cause of worry in Gujarat. As the base year for doubling farmers’ income is fixed to be 2016-17, it is vital to see the farmers’ income levels in Gujarat to develop strategies for income enhancement.

Objectives:

The specific objectives of the work are as follows:

  • To demonstrate drip irrigation systems for peanut crop in villages under project.
  • To liaison with Gujarat Green Revolution Company (GGRC) to access the subsidies for project farmers for installation of drip irrigation system. To liaison for respective state government schemes to facilitate the additional income generating activities for the select households
  • To demonstrate rural income generating farm & non-farm based activities pre-identified by project in addition to peanut farming
  • To organise Farmer Field Schools events at each demonstration site related to drip irrigation systems
  • To organise relevant trainings, for each type of income generating activity demonstration and at least one exposure visit for each category of the activity depicting positive impacts on peanut production system and enhanced incomes of the rural households. To identify the case studies capturing positive impacts of project interventions
